Where Does The Time Go?

I read everybody's blog almost everyday and I realized I hadn't posted this year. Time fly's when you are having fun. While you all are having snow and rain and COLD we have had some decent weather so a lot of outside work is getting done and the computer is that dust gathering thing on the table. So I guess what it all means is you blog when you can or are awake, yep all is good though it's going to rain in a few days for a week. The work here isn't hard there's just a lot of it, never a dull moment. We are so glad we got two kittens they are so entertaining, I guess they are like kids if you are going to have one you just as well have five. We get a little break from the routine, Jody is going to Pleasanton Ca for a conference, cheaper to fly from Portland so I will be taking her to the airport and then staying with friends to play a little music, been a while since my last gig. You all take care now you here.

Job Description

So after a month in our new diggs things have settled down and we have a bit of a routine. The owners live in Rancho Santa Fe and only visit three or four times a year, but we do communicate through email and a little on the phone. Our tasks include, everything one would do on there own place, plus a lot more. We have about 5 acres of park like setting to weed, feed, mow, trim, remove leafs, and chase moles. The 5 acre pond has just been seeded around the edges and that will have to mowed as well, plus keeping the level up in the summer(large pump from the river). Those that have lived in the NW for any length of time know what a pain in the arse blackberries are, well they can be good or bad depending on the use, as a hedge for privacy good, covering up all the newly planted trees, bad. This Ranch has a large house that the owners call the barn, nicest damn barn I've ever seen, and it is prestine the ultimate vacation home with a great view and a river. There are a couple of miles of trails that have to be tended and extended, lots of old Oak, Maple, Doug Fir and about a thousand small pine and junipers planted three years ago. Across the road is about 200 acres of clear cut hillside that is being overtaken by Scotch Broom, bad weed hard to get rid of. So there always something to do, general yard work and lots of it, fencing repair couple miles, tree trimming, house maintenace, landscaping, carpentry, and security. Don't worry we have all the tools for the job, riding mower with mulching vacuum, 4 wheel drive Kubota RTV, and assorted hand tools. Most of the major projects are getting close to complete for the winter, so all the inside work can start, remodle the caretakers quarters, organize the tool and supply areas, fix the minor stuff in the house, mostly checking that all the stuff functions and nothing leaks. This are a full time job folks, and I am a little sore at the end of the day, but we are very greatful to be here and have such a beautiful place to live and work. Please consider a trip to south west Oregon, we would love to see you all.

Yep, We Finally Made It

As of today we have been at our new digs for just under 3 weeks, it's always a major thing when we move even though we live in a 5th wheel. We are not like those weekend warrior travelers or true snowbirds, no this is our home. We have to take everything and there is just so much room in our 36' land yacht, so when we stop and spend the night while on the road we have to look for a motel with a large parking lot.

We spent the first few days settling in and hooking up, I won't bore you with all the details, but most of all we got phone, TV, internet with complete quiet and privacy. We are 5 miles from Elkton, 30 or so from Roseburg, 37 from Reedsport. So far every morning we have had anywhere from 5 to 50 wild turkeys in our front yard, they are very majestic creatures. No we won't be having wild turkey for Thanksgiving, though it is tempting.

This is going to be a long term gig for us, so we got a pair of 5 month old kittens from a local pet rescue. Meet Polly and Scottie, they are brother and sister, they are Scottish Fold very distinctive markings and of course Scottie's ears are a dead give-a-way. We really like these two guys, Polly is very playful and Scottie is still recovering from his rescue trauma but coming around quickly.

Scottie and his cool ears

Polly playing with a mouse, oh did I mention that Polly is a polydactyl like Toes, she has seven toes on one front paw, six on the other and knows how to use them.

You all have a great Thanksgiving, our oven is just big enough to bake a cornish game hen so no turkey for us, we'll be thinking of ya.

Oregon Bound ------------- That's Right!!!

Well the mystery is over, we will be pulling out of Marysville in a few days and heading up to Elkton, OR.
Jody and I have been hired as caretakers on a large property doing general maintenance as well as an on site presence for security. They will provide an apartment(under construction)and a place to park our 5th Wheel. We are looking forward to the new adventure. Our Shaklee business is doing great and that is what allows us keep moving around, come and visit. See ya somewhere down the road.
